Into the Sunset

A nerdgames update re: Ian's Deadlands game.

Well, a few weeks ago we lost Dusty to the evils of the girlfriend trap, heh, and frankly it caused the game to flounder. An integral and only remaining founder=ing member of the group was gone. Simultaneously, life conspired to make us have to cancel the game for five weeks straight, making all of our hopes for continued nerdgaming decline further and further.

Last night we got back into it, but with a reboot. Ian decided that it'd be best for us all to start fresh. So C.J. "the Kid" Chambers gets to ride off into the sunset and live out her imaginary life however I end up imagining it. I'm glad I can put a "happily ever after" before the "the end" in her book. Now I play a Russian cyborg who pretends she's a Canadian Mountie on the hunt for a fugitive in California. The requisite first night's gaming of all the characters meeting and interacting for the first time was wicked fun. Wicked fun that I've really needed lately. So yay.

the Big Bang

Something I've had on my mind since watching Serenity (again, loved it): guns and noise.

I think a lot of the reason people, especially teens and such, don't have a strong respect for guns (keep in mind this is 100% theory for me, based on no actual evidence, especially as I don't have any guns) is not because they're glorified in video games, rap music and film. It's because they aren't portrayed in these mediums as loud as they are in reality.

Nowadays, film gunshots (be they tv or feature film) are muffled, truncated little facsimiles of gunfire. Tappity tappity tap tap tap just ain't that scary or awe/respect inspiring (sadly, even Sin City's gunshots were too muffled).

This realization first hit me with quite a shock as I was watching High Plains Drifter about a month ago. Those guns were loud. Their sound was real and they made me flinch. The thought drifted away again until Serenity where there was loud gunfire again (but, oddly, only in outdoor shooting scenes).

Why has the noise of gunfire been neutered on film? You'd think in America, where we love violence so much it's an integral part of almost all of our cinema (and far more acceptable than sex or naughty language) that filmmakers would embrace the thundering crash of gunfire. And maybe it would even scare one or two kids away from the (sarcasm meta tag)glamorous (/sarcasm meta tag)life of playing with guns they shouldn't be playing with.

Addicted

I've a new addiction to eat up the hours of my insomnia instead of watching tv: taking internet tests. Ever since Drew and Adj started posting tests they've taken at okcupid, I check in to find out (through arbitrary test creators' qualifications) things like what flavour Ben & Jerry's ice cream I am, or how my level of Goonies trivia knowledge stacks up to yours.

This is what happens when you have insomnia and a cold.

Weekend Update

A most hearty welcome back to SNL for Tina Fey. Weekend Update was better this week by so very much. Loved the Sports Minute for Ladies.

Finally got to tune in to Boston Legal again. Still love the show, but what's with half of the cast being replaced again? Betty White and Shatner are the bomb.

CSI...there were so many things wrong with this week's plot... I reiterate, the episodes with more than one crime are a lot tighter and better written.

Nip/Tuck...ugh.

The most pleasant surprises I've had all season: My Name is Earl, a show I expected to be stupid, in the bad way, is actually really really good and How I Met Your Mother seems to improve with every episode. I've been so bored of the sitcom for so long, and so many hour long dramas pack in the funny now, that it's refreshing to have a couple new sitcoms shine. Can't wait 'til Scrubs is back in January, though.

Strange View Update/Edit

I think I was a bit harder on the rappers than I meant to be--especially as they were, on whole, actually more entertaining than the other performers. And I've nothing against white people, rappers or fat people (or any permutations of same)--was just commenting on how un-stereotypical rapper they all came off in presentation. It's not every dau you see Dave Atell and Michael Moore on stage together rapping.

TV Land

How can Bree love that guy? I know Desperate Housewives has always been a tad out there, but I'm thinking it's seriously jumping the shark soon. I'm glad Gabrielle finally took some responsibility in her cheating on Carlos.

West Wing--it's cool that they're dragging out this election and trying to keep the winner a mystery, but am I the only one who still watches and is more interested in what's going on with the white house members of the program?

Congrats on the baby Tina Fey, and hurry back to SNL. Weekend Update needs you, all due respect to Horatio.

Strange View

Last night I went to a Hurricane Katrina benefit with Paul, Kenn, Dusty and Katie (Dusty's new love). The set consisted of ten bands: five hip-hop and five rock and roll (most rockers playing acoustic that night). The hip-hop and rock sets alternated, making for a somewhat crazed tone to the show.

Not a fan of rap, and especially rap by fat, bearded white guys (no lie, one hip-hop group was a pair of white guys who looked exactly like Dave Atell and Michael Moore), I was saddened by the fact that, on whole, they proved to be the superior acts. Bands I normally love to see, like the Imps, were a real chore to listen to acoustic. I'd never seen the Becky Sagers perform before (though they've been here as long as I've lived in this town) and for fat white rappers, they were pretty entertaining.

And not a single one had any bling (unless you count trucker's caps).

Still, it was for a good cause, so I was happy to contribute, even if the music wasn't my thing.

TV Land

CSI was particularly boring tonight. From Grissom's Led Zeppelin reference in the beginning, I knew I was going to be less than entertained. Sure enough, I was right. I find that, fairly uniformly, the episodes that focus on only one crime stretch themselves out for too long and tend to rely on more preposterous plotlines whereas those with two or more crime scenes are tighter and more controlled--with less wiggle room for silly plotlines.

Lost has gone absolutely nowhere for the entirety of its first three episodes. Let's see some more back stories on characters who haven't already had 2+ backstory episodes. I'm beginning to wonder if the show that made its mark by jumping the shark in the first episode has gone and jumped the shark.

Annoyed

Anyone know how to get Google to cease keeping a page in their cache? While I've removed the old blog entries that pertained to foster kids, Google still has them in Google's cache. So even though I've complied and taken them down, someone with enough internet savvy could find them in Google's cache.

Worldview

This past Friday I attended Aeia's classroom for an awards ceremony (she won an award for knowing all of the "palabras importantes" in her spanish immersion Kindergarten class. While there, I was standing by her classroom globe so I gave it a slow twirl.

Her globe still has the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Still has Yugoslavia...

Where is all of our education money going if they can't even afford globes that are less than 15 years out of date?

Less Nerdship

For the past three weeks we haven't had our Sunday night Deadlands game. This is primarily because of Dusty: he has a new girlfriend, which obviously takes precedent to nerdgames, ut unfortunately leaves Ian a bit less enthused to run the game. It's starting to annoy me a bit.
