Scary Comic Reccomendations

My buddy Chris wanted some rec's for horror genre comics. I now share them in lieu of having the free time to write something original this week. Almost at the light...

I haven't read any of the Silent Hill trades.

(And I give the movie a 3 out of 5)

There's good stuff out there, and a LOT of bad.

There's been a GLUT of zombie books since Walking Dead. Walking Dead is the only good one (Though Zombie King #0 is worth a look just for the scene of a zombie raping a cow; and the Shaun of the Dead adaptation is good, but not worth it if you have the movie...). Marvel Zombies is not horrific, but it is gor-tastic and extremely D-Level Cheeze (and written by Walking Dead's writer, Kirkman). REMAINS is the most decent non-Walking Dead zombie book and it's only 5 issues long. the Goon and Hellboy also fight zombies, but they're a lot more comedic adventure.

DC Comics' VERTIGO imprint is hit-and-miss in the horror department. Swamp Thing, which was always meant to be a horror book, was only good in that vein when Nancy Collins was writing it (yeah, I don't like Alan Moore's acclaimed run all that much). John Constantine Hellblazer is a wonderful book to look for in trades (or download as such)--Aim for the first ten issues, and then any story arcs written by Garth Ennis, Brant Morrisson, Mark Millar, Mike Carey. It's the character Keanu's Constantine movie is drawn from, though that movie sucked ass as far as adapting this book goes. Decent horror; the best occult book Vertigo has done. ALSO, my favorite is the Hellblazer mini-series titled SANDMAN PRESENTS: LOVE STREET

(a non-horror aside, if you liked Sandman, you should read the following "Sandman Presents" mini's/one-shots: Thessaliad; Merv Pumkinhead Agent of Dream; Thessaly Witch for Hire; Corinthian).

While not horrific, Y the Last Man is the best comic written period. And it is set in the apocalyptic dystopian horror genre.

Midnight Mass (the first series, NOT "Here there be Monsters) was great. Think X-Files but Mulder and Scully both believe and are married.

30 Days of Night (the first series) was the most original vampire story I've ever read. Though the synopses of both sequels were unappealing enough for me not to read them.

Joe R. Lansdale's Drive-In (and Drive-In 2 which JUST began) are GREAT end-of-the-world horror stories, but the art is a little dirty. Likewise, Joe R. Lansdale's By Bizarre Hands was a great few issue miniseries of single issue horror tales with crisper art. His name is in the title just as I present it if you go looking for it.

Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake Vampire Hunter novel series is about to begin adaptation to comic form. The art looks very nice, hopefully the transition will be as well.

Shadowplay is hit-and-miss, but more often it's "hit."

Fell by Warren Ellis is great too, but more detectivey than scary.

The scariest comic of all is our President.
