Unless you live under a rock, or don't care a whit about South Park news (which I expect is most of you), Isaac Hayes (apparently he was a famous soul musician or something back in the 70's, like anyone famous in the 70's is relevent now)(people, that was sarcasm)(yeesh), who provided the voice of South Park character "Chef" has asked to be released from his contract due to the insensitive way that the show treats religion.
"There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins," Hayes says. "Religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honored. As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices."

Here's a dude that refered/refers to himszelf as "Black Moses" harping on a show's depiction of religion. A show that for 10 years held nothing back and satirized many, many religions. If this was such a problem for him, why quit now and not quit then? They hadn't satirized his "religion," Scientology at all during that time up until this past Fall in an episode where those crazy fictional Scientologists come to believe that Stan is the second coming of L. Ron Hubbard.

Series co-creator Matt Stone had this response:
"This has nothing to do with intolerance and bigotry and everything to do with the fact that Isaac Hayes is a Scientologist and that we recently featured Scientology in an episode of 'South Park,' in 10 years and over 150 episodes of 'South Park,' Isaac never had a problem with the show making fun of Christians, Muslims, Mormons and Jews. He got a sudden case of religious sensitivity when it was his religion featured on the show."
So, I guess we can all hang our heads now at the departure of Chef and his chocolate salty balls.
I really really hope for a Scientologist follow-up episode dealing with Chef's departure.

Totally agree. I hope they kill Chef... and not just have him disappear as Wendy did.
I don't care a whit about South Park, but after hearing this, every subsequent listening of the theme song from Shaft will be tarnished. Which sucks, cause that is an awesomely funky tune.

Today Tony Danza went off on this a little--the great thing was that he took every unsubstantiated rumour about the situation (Comedy Central pulling the episode under threat from TomCruise) and declared them as fact. He could so totally be a newscaster.
And yeah, I moarn Shaft now too.
