Savages by Don Winslow
One of my friends saw a preview for
the film version of this by Oliver Stone and gushed about how it deals
with a poly group. I then saw it was a book...
Let me just say
that the voice of the narration is such that the book is definitely an
Oliver Stone sort of book. Myself, I loved the style of the writing.
With more than 250 chapters, some were pure narration, some chapters
were short poems, some were television script formats. Though
potentially gimmicky, these changes had a rhetorical weight to them.
Pulling back from traditional third person narrative to script format
during some of the tension building scenes help mute the emotional
intensity of those scenes, pleasantly, where they otherwise wouldn't be.
The book has few predictable moments, and a satisfying conclusion.
As
to the poly relationship: I found myself much more invested in the two
male protagonists than the female. Both men were expertly crafted (all
three were expertly crafted over-all) as to their feelings for each
other and for the girl, "O." Early on, you sincerely buy that
both of these very different dudes really love this girl. She, on the
other hand, doesn't really give off the same feeling. She says
she loves them each, but she's really painted much more into fucking,
and much more vested in shallow interests than in actually having a deep
emotional connection with any of them. She's still a fun and
interesting, well-written character; I just didn't buy her emotional
connection to the guys as being remotely equal.
